Our Story

Overview

Saint Michael College, Cantilan, Incorporated is a private Catholic higher education institution founded in 1915. It is one of the 14 schools of the Diocese of Tandag belonging to the Tandag Diocesan Catholic Schools Association (TADICSA).

Located in the quiet lush green municipality of Cantilan, Saint Michael College, Cantilan, Incorporated stands like a lighthouse guiding the young to the safe shores of knowledge and faith. It continues to stand firm on its commitment to proclaim Jesus Christ as the Good News to all, sharing in the evangelizing mission of the Church.

Quality Education

In its century-long existence, SMCCI remains steadfast to its vision of providing integral, quality, Catholic education.

Christ-Centered Education

Michaelinian education is tempered with faith and devotion, ensuring that every Michaelinian is formed in heart and soul.

Our Story

Our Patron: St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, whose name means, “one who is like God,” led the army of angels who cast Satan and the rebellious angels into Hell; at the end of time, he will wield the sword of justice to separate the righteous from the evil (cf. Revelation 12:7ff).

Very little is known about St Michael other than what we know from scriptures, which themselves are sparse. In Daniel, St. Michael is mentioned twice. The first time as one who helped Daniel, and the second time he is mentioned with regard to the end times of the world when he will stand for the “children of your people.”

The first time as one who helped Daniel, and the second time he is mentioned with regard to the end times of the world when he will stand for the “children of your people.”His next mention comes in the Epistle of St. Jude, where St. Michael is said to guard the tombs of Moses and Eve and has contended with Satan over the body of Moses.

The final mention is in Revelation, where St. Michael and his angels, do battle with the dragon.

St. Michael the Archangel has been invoked for protection on various occasions.  In 590, a great plague struck Rome.  Pope St. Gregory the Great led a procession through the streets as an act of penance, seeking the forgiveness of and atoning for sin.  At the tomb of Hadrian (now Castle Sant’ Angelo near St. Peter’s Basilica), St. Michael appeared and sheathed his sword, indicating the end of the plague.  The Holy Father later built a chapel at the top of the tomb and to this day a large statue of St. Michael rests there.

Therefore, in our Catholic tradition, St. Michael has four duties:  (1) To continue to wage battle against Satan and the other fallen angels; (2) to save the souls of the faithful from the power of Satan especially at the hour of death; (3) to protect the People of God, both the Jews of the Old Covenant and the Christians of the New Covenant; and (4) finally to lead the souls of the departed from this life and present them to our Lord for the particular judgment, and at the end of time, for the final judgment.  For these reasons, Christian iconography depicts St. Michael as a knight-warrior, wearing battle armor, and wielding a sword or spear, while standing triumphantly on a serpent or other representation of Satan.  Sometimes he is depicted holding the scales of justice or the Book of Life, both symbols of the last judgment.

As Catholics, we remember through our liturgical rites the important role of St. Michael in defending us against Satan and the powers of evil.

In 1886, Pope Leo XIII (d. 1903), after a prophetic vision of the coming century of sorrow and war, composed the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and ordered that this prayer be said at the conclusion of Mass.

Today, St. Michel is invoked for protection, especially from lethal enemies. He is also the patron of soldiers, police and doctors. His feast day, with the other archangels, is September 29.

FR. JOZEF MENKEN, MSC: Missionary Educator and Defender of the Faith

Father Jozef Menken, MSC (1875-1958) was one of the pioneering eight Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) who came to Surigao in 1908 to minister to the parishes vacated by the Spanish missionaries.

He was born on July 28, 1875 in Amsterdam. He joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart where he professed religious vows on September 19, 1899. Fr. Menken was ordained to the priesthood on August 21, 1904. He dedicated most of his missionary life in the Philippines, particularly in the district of Surigao.

Arriving in Cantilan on December 26, 1908, he saw the urgent need to restore the Catholic school established by the Spanish missionaries. He believed that Catholic education was essential in preserving the faith of the Cantilangnons. He was disheartened to see many Catholic children and youth attending the public and often anti-Catholic schools under the Americans. He pushed for new school buildings and exhorted the parents to send their children to the parish school. In 1915, he named the school Saint Michael College.

Assigned to different parishes in his 42 years as a missionary in the Philippines, he returned to the Netherlands in 1950 for health reasons. He breathed his last on December 8, 1958, fifty years from the very day he set foot in the Philippines. His beloved parish school has since grown and expanded and is now offering courses from basic education to tertiary level. Fr. Menken’s legacy lives on in the heart of every Michaelinian.

1920

SMCCI was founded in 1915 by Fr. Jozef Menken of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart with the primary purpose of educating the young in the arts, sciences, and in the Catholic faith. It grew into a primary and secondary education institution by 1926.

The First Year high school was reopened by Rev. Fr. Antonio Van Odjik, MSC in 1932. The following year saw the arrival of the first batch of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. Mother Marguerite Emmanuel Gehin, SPC, a French nun, became the first Superior of the Sisters’ Community, and at the same time, the High School Principal. The First Secondary Graduation of the school took place in 1936.

1950

The school was temporarily closed during the Japanese occupation. Classes resumed during the liberation. Rev. Fr. Luis Boeren, MSC, took over as Director in 1945. In 1948, Rev. Fr. Atanacio de Castro took over with dual positions as Director and Principal, the first Filipino Secular priest to hold the position in SMCCI. Rev. Fr. Jose Van den Berg, MSC succeeded him in 1957. He also built the Parish Convent that became the Sisters’ Convent. He demolished the old church and constructed a modern church. He also remodeled the high school building.

1980

Rev. Fr. Herman Maalman, MSC became the Director in 1962. In 1967, the College Department was opened offering First Year course in -Liberal Arts and Secretarial. Mrs. Ceniza L. Valerozo was appointed as first College Dean. The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres returned in 1982 and the Elementary Department was reopened in 1983.

2000

Through the years, the school became known as a respected educational institution in the province. In 2018, the SPC Sisters left SMCCI and the Diocese of Tandag took over the overall administration of the school. In 2019, the college programs in Liberal Arts, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Business Administration were granted level 2 accreditations by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities.

O

The Michaelinian Hymn

Hail to thee, dear St. Michael!
SMC, our loved school hail!
We thy loving sons and daughters
Greet thee, our dear Alma Mater.

How glorious is thy mission!
How noble is thy tradition!
Upholding Christian education,
Unfolding the truth of salvation.

Thy namesake is St. Michael!
The great leader of the angels’
The victorious holy Archangel,
Who won the battle so fierce.

Saint Michael so abiding,
Teach us always to be loving.
Help us to ever promptly obey,
Show us to find our way.

Michaelinians, all far and near.
Let’s honor our dear St. Michael;
Ever loyal to our Alma Mater
True men and women for others!
